The Structure of CIP4

CIP4 Working Groups

Only CIP4 members can join the following CIP4 working groups and committees. This list is as of 20 September 2004 and working groups may be added or dissolved as directed by the membership. To gain access to working groups, sign-in to the members-only section of www.cip4.org, select "Working Groups," choose the working group or committee that you are interested in, and select "Join this Group" from the bottom of the Working Group's description page. Please note that a few groups, such as the CIP4 Advisory Board or the Board of Directors, is limited to elected or appointed members and are not available for unrestricted registration by all members. If your company is not currently a CIP4 member, register now for Associate, Full, or Partner membership in CIP4.

Business Networking Group    The Business Networking Group (Business Development Working Group/Committee of CIP4) is a CIP4 initiative to help drive further proliferation of the use of JDF in the print production process; comprised of member company representatives that work in Business Development / Sales & Marketing / Partnership Management responsible for helping their customers and future customers gain the knowledge and establish the relationships to be successful.

Capabilities    This group is to specify JMF based communication channels and a flexible syntax for describing device capabilities within JDF for an automated self-configuration of controller/agents in mixed vendor system environments.

Conventional Printing    This group is to define JDF extensions, clarifications and parts with respect to the needs of conventional sheet fed printing and its integration with MIS.

This includes:
  • the elaboration of ICS documents around systems or controllers that process sheet fed printing jobs.
  • the elaboration of examples and optionally application notes how to write, read, or process such jobs.

Digital Print Workflow    This group is to define JDF extensions with respect to the needs of Print on Demand. Create additional documentation about JDF based Print on Demand workflows. Close cooperation with PODI.

Finishing    This group is to define JDF extensions with respect to the needs of finishing. Inline and offline. Close cooperation with UP3I. Create additional documentation about JDF based finishing.

ICS    Discussion forum for topics related to Interoperability Conformance Specifications.

MIS    Establish the interfaces between the MIS and the various components of the print workflow. The MIS group will determine a minimal set of transaction types by defining a generic interface from MIS to production. This interface will be based on the base ICS developed by the System Behavior & Interoperability group. MIS related JMF messages and JDF Audit elements will be defined and correlated by the working group working with the Device Messaging and Job Status WG. The working group is also chartered to create sub-working groups as needed to facilitate implementation of the charter.

The MIS Working Group is responsible for definition of the following interfaces:

  • Customer to/from MIS (Product Description/Quoting)
Extends the features of JDF related to the interface between customers and MIS systems including eCommerce systems. This includes the definition of product intent descriptions. These product descriptions can originate with the customer or be drafted by the print provider for customer review. This interface also includes the response from the MIS to the customer, such as the quote. Close cooperation with PrintTalk and Euprima.
  • MIS to/from Production Planning
The interface between an MIS and a production scheduling, tracking and planning system.
  • MIS to/from Prepress
The interface between an MIS and a prepress production system.
  • MIS to/from Pressroom
The interface between an MIS and the pressroom including both Digital and conventional printing.
  • MIS to/from Postpress
The interface between an MIS and postpress.

Origination and Prepress    This group is to define JDF extensions for prepress applications and workflows.

Packaging & Label    This group is to define JDF extensions with respect to the needs of packaging & label printing workflow. Close cooperation with IFRA. Create additional documentation about JDF based packaging & label printing workflows.

Product Certification    This group is focused on JDF product certification. Both technical and business issues related to product certification are addressed.

Product Description    Develop product descriptions for commercial transactions. Guarantee that the defined JDF intent resources are necessary and sufficient to describe real-world commercial print products. Define the interface between the customer and the MIS including continuing development of the PrintTalk specification. Both Business to Business and Consumer to Business aspects of PrintTalk are covered. At this time, this group is not covering automated product to process conversion.

System Behaviour and Interoperability    This group focuses on improving the overall interoperability between implementations of JDF, i.e., interoperability conformance profiles that are beyond the scope of any single other CIP4 WG. This group also organizes the Interoperability Testing. This group also encompasses the discussion of JMF features with respect to monitoring and Job tracking (formerly discussed as part of the Device Messaging/JobTracking WG - see Dormant Technical Groups).

Tools & Infrastructure    This group will define, implement and support a set of open source tools, e.g. a JDF parser or a JMF messaging library.

User Group    This group is the place to discuss CIP4 from an end-user perspective. How will it affect your print shop? What areas are you most concerned about?
Together, we will create and manage a list of JDF User Perspective ideas, concerns, and frequently asked questions. The goal is to help end-users affect the direction and details of JDF, and to help end-users discuss ways in which JDF can benefit the user community.
