JDF SPACE, A Big Draw at Graphitec
In spite of a tough European economy, JDF SPACE at Graphitec Convertec (June 9-12, 2009, Paris), attracted over 200 visitors in 4 days. The booth was organized by Patrick Cahuet of 1PRIME with CIP4 members running a total of 32 presentations and 4 tutorials. It was an impressive showing at the most important graphic arts industry exhibition
in France.
Dedicated to workflow automation, JDF SPACE was named as one of the three
"must see" spots in the
show catalogue. CIP4 members who presented JDF integration case studies included: Agfa, ECOFFI, FUJIFILM, GamSys, Heidelberg, Intraprint, KBA, manroland and RHAPSO GRAPHISOFT. Additionally, special guest Ghent PDF Group presented their latest research on PDF. Congratulations to all on their efforts of making JDF workflow
integration more familiar to French printers!

JDF Shoot Out at IPA
CIP4's Chief Education & Marketing
Officer, Mark Wilton (pictured) leads the IPA Technical Conference in reviewing
the results of the JDF shoot out. Similar in format to other shoot out sessions at IPA that focus on proofing and color gamut testing, the JDF test had good participation from CIP4 members and judges alike. The panel of judges included:- Rohit Gangwar, EFI
- Jim Harvey, CIP4
- Chris Heric, Christopher Heric
& Co
- Scott Marienthal, HIFLEX
- Dr Abhay Sharma; Ryerson
University
- Mark Wilton, Wilton &
Partners/CIP4
When it came to CIP4 member vs. LayCrimp ICS, and vs. MIS-to-Prepress ICS, the panel ensured that it was a fair representation and assessment of JDF submission and processing for each of the tests.
Of course, each vendor member had a different take on the results from their system.
"Kudos to all the vendor members who gave this a shot," reported Mark
Wilton, Wilton & Partners/CIP4. "It was an exciting session to be a part
of. In a real world scenario, you would have a
specific solution implemented at your facility, whose connectivity would be vigorously tested before going live with jobs. However, this shoot out proved to be a strong indicator whether a vendor can perform in the JDF realm."
More
JDF tests and showcases at tradeshows and conferences are planned, with hopefully more vendors that are up for the challenge. For results from IPA . . .

JDF User Group
Printing Industries of America kicked off their July JDF User's Group meeting in Little Rock AK, with a tour of operations provided by Democrat Printing. This innovative company has integrated
file acceptance and prepress, and is continually expanding their automation bringing in new equipment from Goss, MBO and others. So far they've been able
to reduce prepress staff from eight to two with the automation
they've completed to date.
The JDF Users' Group agenda featured
presentations from Marcia Bonsell of Communicorp, (a wholly owned division of
the insurance company AFLAC) and Brian Rooney of Mimeo.com. One of the many lively discussions at the meeting concerned printers' reluctance to implement JDF. Many users agreed, that if knowledgeable at all, printers think it's the vendors' role to
work out automation issues, and don't realize they need to drive their
own automation efforts. Unfortunately, printers who are not implementing JDF automation don't hear
enough about the benefits from those who are.
An action item was taken by User Group members to organize a free seminar open to Print 2009
attendees on Saturday, September 12th, from 7:30-10:00 AM.
(Room location and agenda to be sent to CIP4 members via email.) Several
printers agreed to make "printer-to-printer" case studies, and many vendors agreed to both participate and split the costs of the program. Support is forthcoming from Printing
Industries of America and CIP4, as well.

Report from the O&P (Prepress) Workgroup
The O&P Workgroup has made
good progress towards the JDF1.4 MIS to Prepress ICS
(Interoperability spec). Changes include a few new JDF1.4 features and also syncronization with the other
JDF1.4 ICS documents. There was also an
effort to enhance the "value" of the ICS by allowing easier
testability while reducing the number of variations allowed.
Due to the amount of freedom in the structure of JDF in the previous ICS, it made it very
difficult to design and test a Prepress Workflow to work with all
variations. Based on the
experience of current integrations, we created a few use cases, allowing only two variations: a simple and a detailed description; and an "all
shared" vs. "all on product part" structure. Additionally, the O&P WG also helped to
evaluate the results from the recent IPA JDF Test Drive.

Prof. Kular Writes on Process Integration
Ryerson University professor,
Chris Kular has
published an article on "Process Integration for the Graphic Arts
Workflow" in Graphic Arts Magazine, (June 2009). The article
describes how process integration and efficient workflows may be one of the
saviors for our industry, and help to speed up the recovery process. Prof. Kular
suggests that JDF is one of the enabling technologies that promotes integration
between production and bindery. "The goal in any print media operation or
bindery is to maintain a full schedule of profitable work in every shift,"
writes Kular. Read the full article online . . . Contact Chris Kular to come to
your company and talk about savings through workflow automation.
