Biography of
Dr. phil. habil. Jürgen Schönhut
Jürgen Schönhut was born
in Stein (near Nürnberg/Germany) on May 3rd, 1945. He died in November
2005.
Jürgen obtained his PhD (Dr. phil.) with a thesis in Computational
Linguistics in 1972 at the University
of Erlangen-Nürnberg.
From 1972 to December 1985 he worked as scientist at the Regional
Computer Center of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, where he was
responsible for non-numerics, computer graphics and image processing.
Starting January 1986, Jürgen helped to establish the Fraunhofer
Institute for Computer Graphics (IGD) in Darmstadt. He was head of
department at the institute until his sudden death in November 2005.
Jürgen was active in computer graphics standardization from 1979 to 1990.
He was chairman of ISO
JTC1/SC24 from 1983 to 1990.
From 1991 to 1992 Jürgen was elected chairman of the European
Association for Computer Graphics (Eurographics). He was a Eurographics
Fellow.
In 1999 Jürgen obtained his habilitation in computer graphics at the
Computer Science department of the University
of Technology in Darmstadt. He had diverse teaching obligations at
the universities of Erlangen-Nürnberg,
Tübingen, Frankfurt/Main
and Darmstadt.
Since his study times at the university he has been dealing with interdisciplinary
projects.
Jürgen was instrumental in the foundation of the international CIP3 Organization
(International Cooperation for Integration of Prepress, Press, and Postpress)
in 1995. From December 1993 to 1999 he was directing the scientific work
resulting in the specification of the CIP3 Print Production Format, a
data exchange format for the printing industry. In July 2000, when CIP3
was reorganized to CIP4, Jürgen was elected member
of the CIP4 Advisory Board.
Among many other papers and publications, Jürgen published a text book
on Document Imaging: Document
Imaging - Computer Meets Press (Springer Verlag 1997).
