Biography of
Dr. phil. habil. Jürgen Schönhut

Jürgen Schönhut was born in Stein (near Nürnberg/Germany) on May 3rd, 1945. He died in November 2005.

Jürgen obtained his PhD (Dr. phil.) with a thesis in Computational Linguistics in 1972 at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg.

From 1972 to December 1985 he worked as scientist at the Regional Computer Center of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, where he was responsible for non-numerics, computer graphics and image processing.

Starting January 1986, Jürgen helped to establish the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics (IGD) in Darmstadt. He was head of department at the institute until his sudden death in November 2005.

Jürgen was active in computer graphics standardization from 1979 to 1990. He was chairman of ISO JTC1/SC24 from 1983 to 1990.

From 1991 to 1992 Jürgen was elected chairman of the European Association for Computer Graphics (Eurographics). He was a Eurographics Fellow.

In 1999 Jürgen obtained his habilitation in computer graphics at the Computer Science department of the University of Technology in Darmstadt. He had diverse teaching obligations at the universities of Erlangen-Nürnberg, Tübingen, Frankfurt/Main and Darmstadt.

Since his study times at the university he has been dealing with interdisciplinary projects.

Jürgen was instrumental in the foundation of the international CIP3 Organization (International Cooperation for Integration of Prepress, Press, and Postpress) in 1995. From December 1993 to 1999 he was directing the scientific work resulting in the specification of the CIP3 Print Production Format, a data exchange format for the printing industry. In July 2000, when CIP3 was reorganized to CIP4, Jürgen was elected member of the CIP4 Advisory Board.

Among many other papers and publications, Jürgen published a text book on Document Imaging: Document Imaging - Computer Meets Press (Springer Verlag 1997).
