JDF Works Print Shop Live!

End-to-end Automated Print Production Lines at 3 Workflow Locations on Show Floor

The JDF Works Print Shop Live! program is designed to show you exactly what can be accomplished with today’s production automation technologies. Graph Expo attendees can follow a live production job through production at three different locations; from online job creation and customization, through order management, scheduling, prepress, imposition, printing and finishing to the final printed piece. Integrated via JDF data interchange, the JDF Works Print Shop Live sites features equipment from different vendors (just like the real world) in production with minimized processing time, minimal labor, and maximized throughput.

JDF Works Print Shop Live isn’t a demonstration of future technology, it’s inspiration for printers who want to learn how to compete and maximize profits even in a difficult economy. If you’ve been looking for answers, JDF Works Print Shop Live is the place to start.

Booth 3646 A-E: Adobe, FOLDRite, Avanti, Kodak, Duplo

Graphic Art Show Company in partnership with CIP4 will be providing a unique “web to print” experience for attendees at Graph Expo. Through collaboration and efforts across a dedicated team of vendors including Adobe, FOLDRite, Avanti, Kodak, and Duplo, there will be a “live” demonstration of JDF showing how industry standards can work together in a “Design to Finishing” workflow automation.

Show attendees will be stepped through the process, from file creation to finishing, while learning about the process along the way. Descriptive placards will label and describe in detail each step in the workflow. The unique demonstration will begin at the design desktop, by creating a brochure that was designed using Adobe InDesign CS3 with a FOLDRite™ folding template.

The FOLDRite System, accessible through an InDesign plug-in, or through a web browser, demonstrates how easy it can be for a designer to choose the folding style and create a “production-ready” template directly within Adobe InDesign. FOLDRite templates are fully compensated for the folding process with fold marks in place and standardized naming conventions. The design layout, the folding information and JDF “intent” will pass through to Avanti’s Print MIS System.

The Avanti system will convey the job description (JDF) and job messaging (JMF) to illustrate the process of automation for web to print and will communicate to Kodak Prinergy Digital Workflow System using Prinergy Business Link, then through to production by driving the Kodak Nexpress Digital Color Press.

The printed sheet will move on to a Duplo® DC-645 Slitter/Cutter/Creaser, which combines slitting, cutting, and creasing in one product so applications requiring these three functions are handled in a single pass. For the first time, Duplo is adding a knife folding option to the versatile DC-645 slitter, cutter, creaser, thus hugely extending the on-line capability of the production color finisher. By incorporating folding into the single system operation, printers can now fully finish different applications such as greeting cards, folded ‘tent’ business cards, brochures, leaflets and many more. With a state-of-the-art user interface, the DC-645 has been specifically developed to support the JDF industry standard.

You can pick up a copy of the Must See Em’s, which will be printed live along with an educational piece showing how the workflow came together. The educational piece includes a diagram and further information on each of the vendors participating in this exciting “live” action on the show floor. Don’t miss it!

Booth 1200: Heidelberg — Integration in Practice

Print production workflow has changed dramatically over the years. Contemporary printers realize that a workflow is not departmentalized, but is a concept that starts from the moment a job is accepted to the moment it is delivered and invoiced ... and everything in between. Join Heidelberg on a JDF production tour and witness first-hand how the Job Definition Format is generated and transferred from MIS to prepress to press and finishing systems.

Your journey will begin with Print Management. This is where you will see the origination of the JDF, which may be generated by either the Heidelberg Prinect Prinance system or the EFI Hagen OA system. Production flexibility and visibility is the key to success, and as your journey continues, you will see the transfer and evolution of the JDF from MIS to the Prinect Integration Manager, including Prepress, Pressroom, and Postpress Management. The journey continues through the Heidelberg demonstration plaza where you will observe the path of the JDF to the Speedmaster XL105 and into the Postpress arena.

Equally important to actual production is the ability to track jobs and evaluate efficiency, and this where you will see the Job Messaging Format (JMF) in action. Throughout production, all systems and operators continuously deliver production data to the Prinect Integration Manager; the central JDF manager that combines the data and provides it to the JDF-enabled Print Management System. This is where your journey ends, and you will have the chance to see production reports and the new, fully integrated Prinect Production Scheduler. JDF/JMF delivered from beginning to end according to the specification of the CIP4 organization, presented to you by Heidelberg USA.

Booth 2000: EFI Digital StoreFront

These live JDF workflows show advantages of JDF-enabled devices and systems, letting you handle more jobs with the same equipment and operators by letting operators focus on more productive, interesting tasks, rather than manually configuring jobs or reentering the same information in multiple workflow steps. Additionally, production data (time and materials) is automatically collected, providing much more detailed data collection than is feasible in a manual system.

EFI Digital StoreFront operators can submit jobs directly via JDF/JMF for unattended printing and in-line finishing on Canon’s imagePRESS C1 with the imagePRESS Server Q2. For more managed workflows, operators can submit EFI Digital StoreFront jobs through EFI Pace for unattended printing or submit jobs from Objective Advantage Symbio through automated workflows that include unattended printing and automatic setup and nearline finishing on a Duplo DC-645 Slitter/Cutter/Creaser.
